Turning 50

I was born in Poland — a country shaped by history, resilience, and a stubborn streak I clearly inherited. Somewhere along the way I traded the familiar for the unknown, and Belgium became my chosen home. Most people know me as Piotr, some call me Peter, and online I go by Nordr — a nod to the Norse mythology that has fascinated me since I was a kid flipping through books about Vikings and runes.

I turn 50 in April 2026. Half a century sounds like a lot until you realise how much road is still ahead. I speak nine languages, I’ve co-authored two books, I ride motorbikes into places most people only see on maps, and I still can’t sit still for longer than it takes to finish a good espresso.

Professionally my brain runs on strategy — intellectual property, international affairs, risk management. But the moment the laptop closes, the hands take over: wrenching on bikes, shooting photos, rolling on mats in Jiu-Jitsu. I’ve always believed a sharp mind works best when it lives in a body that moves.

// What Drives Me

The Things That Keep Me Moving

I’ve never been good at standing still. These are the pursuits that fuel the restlessness — and give it meaning.

Visual Storytelling

A photograph isn't just a frame — it's how I remember a place long after I've left. Behind the lens, whether drone, street, or portrait, I chase the light that tells a story words can't.

Off-the-Map Travel

Mass tourism was never my thing. I'm drawn to the overlooked corners — the dirt road that doesn't appear on Google Maps, the village where nobody speaks your language but everyone offers tea.

Two Wheels, Open Road

There's a specific kind of freedom that only comes at 120 km/h with nothing between you and the horizon. Boots on pegs, visor down, ten hours of tarmac ahead — that's when my head goes quiet.

Ancient Wisdom & Deep Dives

From the sagas of the Norse and the Slavs to the psychology of modern tribes — I read, research, and dig into the 'why' behind cultures, myths, and human behaviour.

Jiu-Jitsu & Discipline

The mat doesn't care about your job title. Jiu-Jitsu teaches me humility three times a week — and the discipline carries over into everything else I do.

Strategic Downtime

Board games with depth, video games with narrative. Not mindless scrolling — intentional play that sharpens the mind or simply lets it rest.

// The Day Job

Strategy, IP & the Written Word

By day I operate at the intersection of intellectual property and international strategy. I’ve spent years navigating the patent landscape — advising, auditing, and helping organisations make sense of the complex machinery behind global innovation protection.

That work culminated in two books about the Patent Cooperation Treaty, both published by Wolters Kluwer. The extended Annotated PCT came out in December 2024 — a project that took years of writing and more cups of coffee than I care to admit.

I also teach IP Law at the University of Göttingen as part of the LIPIT (Law and Informatics / IT Law) programme — passing on what I’ve learned to the next generation of IP professionals. Standing in front of a classroom keeps me sharp in ways that writing alone never could.

I hold certifications in ISO lead auditing, project management, and quality & risk management. But titles aside, what I really do is connect dots — between systems, people, and ideas that don’t always sit comfortably next to each other.

// In My Own Words

Definitions by Piotr

Hell:

A packed all-inclusive beach resort with a DJ playing pop remixes at noon, nowhere to escape, and someone trying to sell me a selfie stick.

Heaven:

A gravel road somewhere in Scandinavia, nobody ahead, nobody behind. Booted, clad in leather, my motorbike purring underneath me, rain clouds rolling in, and the smell of pine trees mixing with engine heat.

Success:

Not the corner office — it’s speaking a new language well enough to make someone laugh, publishing a book that actually helps people, and sleeping well knowing you earned the day.
